SynTouch LLC is a start-up technology business that develops and manufactures tactile sensors for mechatronic systems. It was founded in 2008, by researchers from the Medical Device Development Facility of the University of Southern California. SynTouch has secured multiple SBIR grants from a range of federal agencies, and is aggressively patenting its technology domestically and abroad.

Our mission is to continue the development of tactile sensors that mimic the sensory function of the human fingertip for scientists seeking to develop cutting-edge applications where the sense of touch is beneficial. Our technology is modeled after the complete multi-modal sense of touch in the human fingertip which includes the sense of deformation and force, vibration, and temperature. We strive to develop the same multimodal sensitivity and dynamic range in the human hand in a form that is economical, robust and field-serviceable for use in realistic environments. Our proven, patented technology, is being integrated into form factors for various applications, including robots for industrial, military, and agricultural tasks, as well as prosthetic hands.

Tactile information from our BioTac® can be used for closed-loop control of grip strategies, for telerobotic and haptic displays to human operators, and for haptic perception by autonomous robots.

SynTouch has a unique expertise in the sensing, signal processing and applications of biomimetic touch and seeks to partner with researchers and manufacturers involved in these fields to develop complete products that are enabled by tactile sensing.
